Window Treatments
Window Treatments from Interiors by JW
We all know Window Treatments complete the look of a well-designed room while also making it feel more cozy and inviting. However, there are many other reasons to invest in good quality window coverings. Let’s look at a few:
Control Privacy, Light & Heat
How you live in a room can determine the type of window treatments you chose. A room where computers or television is the primary activity may need fabrics and treatments that reduce light and glare. A bedroom covering may need to darken or totally block the light in the room at certain times of the day. Knowing all the ways in which your space will be used will help guide these decisions.
Acoustics
Many of our newer homes have wonderfully large windows, but at certain times of the day we may wish to block out the light to control heat, glare or have more privacy in the evening.
Architectural
They can conceal the awkwardness of a room, or even alter the apparent size, shape and character of a room. Once you have decided to invest in window treatments, there are a few things to consider before selecting a style or a type of product.
Exposure
The west side may need window blinds, blackout shades or lining, while the north side may need to allow in as much light as possible. Paying attention to how your windows and your home are positioned directionally will help with these issues when choosing window coverings.
Degree of Formality
Depending on how formal or informal you want your space to feel will help in your selection. If you prefer a contemporary, uncluttered look, the preference may be “less fussy” simple treatments using textured or solid colored materials. Perhaps you prefer a traditional or period design calling for multiple layers with elegant fabrics and trims. Our interior designers can help you zero in on the look that’s best for your space
Light
Do you want to maximize the light in the room, do you prefer a warm, cozy room with subdued lighting, or total darkness.
Lifestyle
How you live in a room can determine the type of window treatments you chose. A room where computers or television is the primary activity may need fabrics and treatments that reduce light and glare. A bedroom covering may need to darken or totally block the light in the room at certain times of the day. Knowing all the ways in which your space will be used will help guide these decisions.
Architecture
How the windows open, the type of moldings, the shape of the windows and the size of the windows all are determining factors in the style and window treatment design chosen.
Design & Furniture Style
Your personal interior design style may be a pared down, sleek, uncluttered look calling for window treatments that enhance that look. Or your style may be grand and luxurious, where a multi-layered treatment using rich fabrics and trims is the best choice. Our interior designers can provide examples for you to look through.
Outside Appearance
This is an area that often gets overlooked. When choosing what looks good on the inside, remember the back side of the window coverings will be visible from outside your house. Your selection should be viewed from the front and the back to ensure you are making the best choice for your window.
Budget
This is an issue for all of us. Consider the length of time you plan to live in your home and the fact that quality window treatments will add to the resale value. Making a quick, inexpensive choice may not be the cheapest way to go in the long run.
View
If you have a fabulous view, the best treatment may be no treatment at all or a simple top treatment framing the window but not obstructing the view…..depending on all the other factors listed above, our interior designers can help you make the best decision for your home.
